마담 뺑덕, 이야기 없는 이야기

They are descendants and summaries of numerous art genres that developed until the 19th century. A ten-finger bite may hurt more. Movies are the enemy of many art genres, but they are especially direct descendants of novels. In the late 19th century, Charles Dickens completed the form of a novel by moving back and forth from “The Great Legacy” to “A Christmas Carol.” The movie inherited Dickens’ great legacy. Movies are a genre of narrative above all else. In order to grow up as a popular art, movies had to strengthen their own narrative. Anyway, the audience is bound to go crazy about the characters and stories. It was natural that the movie, which rose from commercial art to the blockbuster box office industry, maximized its novelistic features. In particular, Hollywood commercial movies began to get better. With great things to see in the beginning, the ironclad rule of commercial movies was established that the introduction of characters should end in a single stroke. Indeed, it was nothing short of a suffocating shackle to filmmakers. The form of movies did not know that they would change from the same form for decades. Korean movies alone did not dare to break this principle. Rather, it was hard to follow the principles of narratives properly and tell interesting stories. He couldn’t even perform properly, but he couldn’t make a variation. In the end, the storytelling skills of Korean films were formed to a level that was not envious of Hollywood. The next problem was. Once you had established the format, you now have to break the format. It was more difficult than setting the format. I didn’t dare. A few eccentric film directors challenged this type of experiment. Every time, it failed. Being different in format meant unfamiliar. If unfamiliar, it is difficult to box office. Director Lim Pil-sung was one of the directors who was motivated to do such a challenge. Even his debut film, “Namgeuk Diary”, was different. It was like a huge blockbuster, but it turned out that it was a mixture of zombie and horror. “Namgeuk Diary” was filmed because I had to die in the freezing cold, but it became a film that the audience was unfamiliar with. The same was true of “Helzel and Gretel”. Director Lim Pil-sung borrowed the classics and then focused only on formal experiments. Director Lim Pil-sung tried to show that the filmmaker is a descendant in art, music, and photography other than novels. He failed again. “Hensel and Gretel” was evaluated as having no story but only the visuals. In “Madam Bingeok”, director Lim Pil-sung made a slightly different choice. He did not deviate from the story. Director Lim Pil-sung himself explained, “I wanted to film a film with my feet on the ground.” Even in the second half, he brought the motif’s story frame without reinterpreting it. Then, there was a wide space in the film to express emotions. When the narrative of the film is strengthened, lines, acting, and directing are likely to be subordinated to the story. Because you have to explain the story to the audience. The lines explain the situation, the acting describes the situation, and the directing is more buried in the next scene than in the current scene. The lines, acting, and directing of “Madam Pengdeok”, which is set in the story, are almost completely free from characters and stories. It is thoroughly faithful to the dash, the emotional lines created by characters and stories. Thanks to this, Jung Woo-sung’s acting in “Madang Pengdeok” is inextricably stable. Jung Woo-sung has been weak in long-breathing acting so far. It was largely due to his handsome appearance. When I tried to express the drama caused by his appearance, my inner acting emotions stopped popping. In the end, Jung Woo-sung seemed to be an actor who was worse at acting than he really was. In “Madam Pengdeok”, Jung Woo-sung played Shim Hak-kyu and remained as faithful to the emotions of the scene as possible. It is different from the first scene. Shim Hak-kyu’s expression on his face, who arrived in a rural neighborhood after passing through the boring cherry blossom road. When I accidentally see young and green Deok, my whole body comes alive. The scene exists only to express the emotion. The whole nation knows the story that will unfold anyway. Emotions are poetic because there is no need for explanation. The motif of “Madam Pengdeok” is “Simcheongjeon”. Even elementary school students know the plot of “Simcheongjeon”. The main character is Shim Cheong, the supporting actor is Shim Hak-kyu, and the villain is his mother. “Madam Pengdeok” adapts the national classic in a new form. First of all, the title is “Madam Pengdeok”. If the title is “Simcheongjeon”, the main character is Shimcheong. The title is “Madam Pengdeok”, so the main character is Deok. “Madam Pengdeok” takes Deok as the main character and leads the film to a love story between Shim Hak-kyu and Deok. First of all, the first half of “Madam Pengdeok” is about “Simcheongjeon Begins”. It unravels the past history of Shim Hak-kyu and Deok-yi, which is not found in classical novels. It turns out that Shim Hak-kyu was a bad guy. Shim Hak-kyu, who is a bit of a writer, is also chased down to the province because of a scandal with a female college student at university. Again, he seduces Deok, an innocent neighborhood girl, without giving her my habit. Suddenly, Shim Hak-kyu is reinstated. Of course, Shim Hak-kyu immediately offers virtue. Deok is pregnant with Shim Hak-kyu’s child. He is terminated. He disappears with the promise of going up to Seoul and contacting him. An accident occurs. Shim Hak-kyu’s wife commits suicide and Deok’s mother is burned to death. Shim Hak-kyu does nothing after seeing Deok-yi enter the fire pit to save his mother. From that day on, Shim Hak-kyu becomes blind, and Deok-yi burns revenge against Shim Hak-kyu. Everyone knows this story from the second half after “Simcheongjeon Beginnings” in the first half. Deok-yi, who has been reborn as a wicked mother, gradually collapses Shim Hak-kyu. Cheng Yi is sold across the Indangsu line to Japan in exchange for a cash envelope corresponding to Gongyangmi. He knows the conclusion. Cheng Yi, who has been sold, meets the Dragon King. Of course, he is a modern dragon king. When Cheng Yi returns, of course, Sim Bong-sa opens his eyes.At this point, “Madame Peng-deok” would have remained a fresh and boring movie in the first half. There are countless movies in the film history that have reinterpreted classics like “Madame Peng-deok”. Director Terry Gilliam’s “The Picture Brothers” turn the Grimm brothers, famous as fairy tale writers, into action heroes. Even director Im Pil-sung, who directed “Madame Peng-deok,” reinterpreted children’s fairy tales in a modern way in the second scene “Hansel and Gretel” taken in 2007. “Madame Peng-deok” is only an extension of the reinterpreted film in terms of genre. If unique, it means that it reinterpreted the Korean classics. “Madame Peng-deok” did not remain only in the reinterpretation of the classics. Through the classics, we move on to an experiment in a different film format. When the national classics are motifs, unlike other films, two things are decided by themselves. It’s a character and a story. “Shim Cheong-jeon” was used as a motif, but Chunhyang cannot be the main character. Shim Hak-kyu, Shim Cheong-yi, and Peng-deok have no choice but to appear. Except for the characters, the only thing that remains is a story. The classical reinterpreted films so far used to show imagination in the stories. “Snow White” became an action or “Janghwa Hongryeon” became a horror. Director Im Pil-sung even cleaned up most of the stories. In the first half, it was changed to a love story between Deok-i and Shim Hak-kyu, but after that, it did not create a new development. The second half follows the story structure of “Applicationjeon”. In fact, this second half is the subject of controversy in “Madam Bingeok”. This is because the second half may feel old-fashioned, unlike the first half, which looked different like “Simcheongjeon Beginnings”. The second half unintentionally turns “Madam Bingeok” into a unique form experiment. When reinterpreting the classics, if you give up even the characters and stories, the only remaining emotions are feelings in the relationship between the characters. All that remains are feelings that Deok hates Shim Hak-kyu, Shim Hak-kyu abusing him, Shim Hak-kyu sympathizes with Deok, Deok-ga loves Shim Hak-kyu, and Cheongga understands Shim Hak-kyu.
